The deal, in plain English

What whatthefix is

A free AI-powered guidance service. It reads your description and photos and gives you a likely diagnosis, general fix-it-yourself steps where they are safe, typical UK price ranges, and (if you ask) introductions to local tradespeople.

What it is not

  • It is not a site survey, an inspection, or professional advice about your specific installation. It has not seen your home; it has seen your description of it.
  • It is AI-generated and can be wrong. Sanity-check anything that matters, and always follow your appliance manual over anything we say.
  • It never authorises unsafe work. Gas appliance work is for Gas Safe registered engineers and fixed wiring is for qualified electricians, whatever any web page says. If you smell gas, call 0800 111 999.

DIY is your call

Where we describe user-level steps (topping up pressure, bleeding a radiator, cleaning a filter), you carry them out at your own risk and only if you feel confident. If in doubt, do not: getting a pro in is exactly what the rest of the site is for.

Tradespeople we introduce

Trades on whatthefix are independent businesses, not our employees or subcontractors. The contract for any work is between you and them: check their registration where it applies (Gas Safe for gas, a competent person scheme for electrics), get an itemised quote, and pay them directly. We take reports about bad experiences seriously and remove trades who earn it.

Price ranges

Ranges shown anywhere on this site are typical estimates for a normal UK job in 2026, not quotes or promises. Your actual price depends on your actual job.

Fair use

The AI endpoints have daily fair-use limits so the free service stays free. Automated scraping or farming of the service is not on.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses arising from reliance on free AI guidance or from work carried out by independent tradespeople. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot legally be limited, or your statutory consumer rights.
