How this works, with the curtain open
Something breaks. You search the symptom at 11pm, land on five sites that all want your phone number before they will tell you anything, and end up none the wiser about the only three questions that matter: what is it, can I fix it, and what should fixing it cost?
whatthefix answers those three questions first, free, no signup. Describe the problem or photo it, and our AI (trained on the way things actually break in UK homes) gives you the likely fault, honest fix-it-yourself steps when they are safe, and a fair price range when they are not.
How we make money
If you want the job done, you can ask us to share your details with up to 3 local tradespeople, who pay us for that well-qualified lead. That is the whole business model. We never sell your details for anything else, and nobody contacts you unless you tick the box asking for quotes.
Notice what that means: when the honest answer is “top the pressure up yourself, it is free”, we earn nothing, and we tell you anyway. The diagnosis being genuinely useful is the reason you might come back when something bigger breaks, and that is a better business than squeezing you today.
The lines we do not cross
- Gas work is for Gas Safe registered engineers. The diagnosis will never coach you past that line, and neither will any trade we send.
- Fixed electrical wiring is for qualified electricians. Same rule.
- No fake urgency, no fake counters, no invented reviews. If it can wait, we say it can wait.
- AI guidance is guidance, not a site survey. Big decisions deserve a professional's eyes on the actual job.
Who is behind it
whatthefix is built in Cardiff by a small independent team that also runs established UK service businesses. Questions, corrections, or a fault guide you would like us to add: hello@whatthefix.co.uk.
